A Nigerian teen’s footstep-powered phone charger is now installed at his local market.

Teenagers generate electricity by stomping on things, and the market provides free charging.

In a bustling town in Nigeria, a teenager named Emeka turned daily footsteps into electricity. Concerned that many local vendors couldn’t charge their phones during long market hours due to power outages, he began experimenting with pressure plates made from scrap metal, wires, and salvaged radio parts. After months of tinkering, he built a small, durable foot-powered generator—one that converted human steps into usable electrical energy.

He installed the first version at his local market’s entrance, where hundreds pass through each day. As people walk over the embedded pressure pads, the force from their steps turns tiny coils beneath the surface, generating a trickle of power. That energy flows to a central battery unit hooked up to USB outlets, allowing anyone to plug in and charge their phones for free while they shop or sell.

The setup is simple, safe, and weatherproof—covered with thick rubber sheeting to protect the mechanics below. Emeka even added LED indicators that blink when power is being generated. The stallholders call it the “charging mat” and say it’s changed their routines. They no longer have to walk miles or pay to charge their phones elsewhere.

His innovation is now gaining attention from local schools and NGOs, who see it as a low-cost, renewable solution for crowded areas with unreliable electricity. From discarded scraps and an idea rooted in need, Emeka’s charger shows that every step forward can truly spark change.
